There are those whom believe that Joseph's wife was an Egyptian. I tend to disagree with this thought. The scepter was Judah's but the birthright belonged to Joseph.

Jacob adopted Joseph's two sons and passed the birthright blessings onto them. I find it highly unlikely that he would have done this had the boys been of mixed blood.

Joseph's youngest son Ephraim received the birthright blessing not his older brother Manasseh.

Joseph did indeed marry an Egyptian woman. The Pharoah gave him Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Phe/ rah, priest of On. (Gen. 41:45) If she wasn't Egyptian, then neither would her father the priest have been, and I would find that even harder to accept! But why would that marriage seem strange to us? God has all power and can work all things to His glory. Boaz, who was the great, grandfather of David, married Ruth who was a moabitess and brought forth Obed who the grandfather of David. (Ruth chp. 4)


That's right, the scepter was Judah's, a son of Leah, and the fourth son of Jacob (Israel). His tribe would bring forth the Jews Messiah, the Savior of the world. "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet , until Shiloh comes; . . ." ( Gen. 49: 10)


Yes, the birthright belonged to Joseph, but originally it belonged to Reuben who was the first son of Jacob, who forfeited it when he went in and laid with his father's concubine. Jacob told him that he was unstable as water and would not excel. (Gen. 49:4). From Joseph, the birthright was passed on to Menasseh, the youngerof Joseph's two sons, whose offspring became the tribe of Menasseh.
